Spawner Salmon Surveys (5).JPG

SPAWNER

SALMON SURVEYS

Surveys.

Spawner salmon surveys involve counting salmon that return to spawn in our local creeks. We conduct weekly surveys starting in late September or early October and continuing to the end of December. We use the survey information to identify trends and spot problem areas.

Spring fry surveys are conducted when salmon fry are expected to emerge from the gravel. Volunteers sit quietly by a smooth section of the creek and count small fry. The surveys end when hatchery fry are released into the creek.

We usually have several creeks where no adults were found during the fall spawner survey, yet emerging fry are found. This is a clear indication that adult salmon have spawned but were either not observed or not present for the spawner surveys
